Club Statement
All football facilities closed and activities suspended for 2 weeks
Felixstowe & Walton United Football Club announce the suspension of all football activity for a period of 2 weeks and the temporary closure of all facilities.
Although no cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed directly at the club, the rapidly escalating situation at a local level means it is probably only a matter of time before there is so.
Just 2 weeks ago the Club were vocal in the view that football should be allowed to continue and this was based on cases being amongst the lowest level in the country in Suffolk. Since then, the situation is worsening and it is only right we as a club evolve our decisions based on the changing situation of the virus.
According to the figures, cases in the East Suffolk area have doubled, with 80+ cases confirmed in Felixstowe in the last 7 days, and presumably multiple times that number undetected. Ipswich is experiencing a surge of cases and hospital admissions also. It certainly appears that the virus is nearer our doorstep than at any time during this pandemic.
Although our ground meets all Covid-secure guidelines, and our Covid protocols and risk assessments are stringently adhered to, it is clear that cases will continue to increase in the community whilst interactions are taking place.
We have a duty of care, not just to our players, management, parents, club officials, supporters, volunteers and staff to protect them from as much risk as possible, but also to the wider community. By ceasing our activities we will decrease the possibility of transmission in our area and these health responsibilities outweigh any need for sport at the current time.
With the First Team fixtures already suspended, the Reserves, Under 18’s and Junior section will now be suspended for a period of 2 weeks, at which time a further review will be undertaken, based on the situation at the time, to either continue the suspension or resume football activities.
The suspension also applies to 3rd party users of the facilities.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors and everyone else connected with the club for their support and we look forward to resuming when it is safe to do so.
In the meantime have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
